A Meaningful Tradition

Students at the Chung's house

On September 20, our school had Staff Home Vespers. This is a cherished Friday evening tradition where students gather in various faculty homes to spend the evening and welcome the Sabbath. This special event allows students to connect with faculty in a relaxed, familial setting outside of normal school life.

The evening begins with a home-cooked meal, offering a comforting taste of home and a delightful break from cafeteria food. As students gather around the table, laughter and conversation flow, creating an atmosphere where everyone feels valued and at ease. With our wonderfully diverse community, the culinary journey is a highlight, showcasing flavors from around the world. Here’s what some students had to say about their unforgettable experiences:

Students at the Lazar's House

"It was exciting to enjoy Indian food and learn about different cuisines. There was a cozy atmosphere as we sat on an Indian rug in the living room. Our group included representatives from Omani, South Korea, India, Belize, and Brazil. After dinner, we played a fun game where we shared our favorite dishes and guessed two truths and a lie about each other. Later, we moved outside under the tree, singing hymns and enjoying the beautiful weather. The experience deepened my appreciation for our diverse backgrounds, and it was inspiring to see us all come together as a big heavenly family,” Sophie shared.

For staff home vespers, students are divided into different faculties homes, allowing students to bond with various staff families from year to year. “Staff home was definitely an enjoyable experience,” Keira noted. “Getting to know each other better over dinner was really neat. We had some good discussions and enjoyed activities that helped us get to know each other on a deeper level. Some questions were simple, like favorite colors; others involved more thought, such as what we would want to do once we get to heaven. It showed me another side of staff and fellow students that I often don't usually see in day-to-day conversations. I definitely enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one!”

Students at the Brooks' house

Victoria, a new student, shares her staff home experience; “I was in the Brooks family staff home, and the whole evening was amazing. I especially enjoyed talking and laughing during a delicious meal. For worship, we sang and listened to the Brooks read a story from the book Pilgrim’s Progress Part 2. One of the many things I enjoyed the most about my staff home was how much it felt friendly and inviting like a family. Because I live far away from home, it is nice to have another temporary one here at school. I left the evening feeling happy and excited. I had a wonderful time and I am looking forward to the next time we can have Staff Home Vespers.”

These evenings not only strengthen the bonds within our school community but also weave lasting memories that students will carry with them long after they graduate. Staff Home Vespers is more than just an event; it’s a beautiful reminder of the connections we build and the rich tapestry of cultures we celebrate together.
